During the lockdown, with students completing classes through e-school, I have been able to work with my students the same way I have worked with my college students out of state for the past few years through Facetime or Zoom.

They talk with me from their bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, and the like.

We figure out what assignments need to be completed and set up a list for the current day or week. They spend time going through what is expected for each assignment and we use the time for them to complete assignments. We work on papers, studying for tests, basic homework assignments, or whatever they need to complete. I usually ask for them to tackle the most difficult or most boring assignment first, to get it out of the way.

Many of my clients send me a handwritten list of what has been assigned for that day, so I know they know what is expected to be completed. Later in the day, they check in and let me know that they have finished and have turned in all required work.

This is a great time to bring up their grades as there are less distractions than usual, and most work must be completed that day for attendance purposes and class credit. The school day feels different as some only have to work in the morning and they are finished with assignments. Other schools go throughout the day with built–in breaks, but since there are no after-school activities, it seems like a much shorter day. Once they are done, they are free to be on their phones, exercise, eat, talk with friends, go on the computer, watch TV, and hang out with family all snug in the house together.
